HISTORY OF MAGMA
Founding
Magma was founded in September 1989 as a private company. From the start, the company has tried to satisfy the needs of its customers with an assortment of high-quality products accompanied by first-class service. This remains our top priority, but we also implement the latest trends in successful management in the field of production, purchase, distribution, retail and marketing. The first store was opened in 1990 in Zagreb under the name Turbo limač.
Expansion
The name Turbo limač was patented and has become synonymous with toys, children clothing and goods of various brands. In 1993 Magma began distributing confectionery and breakfast food brands such as Bahlsen, Haribo, Kelloggs and others. The distribution network expanded to include Split, Rijeka and Osijek, and Turbo limač stores opened in all large Croatian cities. In 1995 the company included fashion and sports brands in its profile.
Growth in the 1990s
Several sports stores were opened in Zagreb as well as the fashion stores Mexx and Esprit. Soon more stores followed, in Osijek and Split, and the chain of sports stores was copyrighted under the name Turbo sport. In 1997 the British company Jupiter Investment Fund bought Magma shares and Magma turned into a stock company.
Zagreb saw the opening of the Turbo Center - today Turbo limač/Turbo sport - with extensive storage space. Operation "Night Shimmy" was introduced: the goods were distributed from the central warehouse in Zagreb to wholesale customers across the country in only 24 hours. New Turbo limač, Turbo sport and Magma fashion stores sprouted and the company was able to boast of the largest non-alimentary retail chain in this part of Europe. Catalog and online sales were introduced, while cutting-edge IT helped integrate communication with the outside world and management within the company.
Growth of Magma offspring companies
In keeping with the spirit of the new millennium the time has come to make yet another dream come true - expansion outside Croatia, to the whole of Southeast Europe. In September of 2002, Magma B d.o.o. started operation with its headquarters in Sarajevo and in November of the same year Magma International d.o.o. opened in Belgrade. Magma International Ltd. was founded in March 2003 with its headquarters in Hong Kong. In June of 2005 Magma S Ltd. was founded in Ljubljana, thus venturing onto the EU market.
When changing markets in the region demanded an entirely new approach to distribution, Magma Distribucija d.o.o. was founded in 2006 in Zagreb.
Market position
Today Magma is the leading Croatian retailer of top international brands in fashion, sports, toys and baby products. It is also a leading distributor of some of the best confectionery and breakfast food producers in the world, such as Kellogg, Haribo, Nestle, Bahlsen and others.
